The gathering is the annual meeting of the US LHC Users Organization.

The LHC benefits from the contributions of 97 U.S. universities and laboratories. More than a quarter of the engineers, physicists and graduates working on the LHC experiments are from U.S. universities and labs.

Meeting attendees will discuss ongoing work on data analysis, the LHC accelerator and detector upgrades and day-to-day issues facing members of the U.S. particle physics community working at CERN.

"We provide a forum for issues that concern the US LHC community, which is of course very international, and a channel to communicate the status and needs of this community to Congress, funding agencies and executive offices," said US LUO Chair Harvey Newman.

Representatives of the DOE and NSF will also give the view from Washington on the future U.S. HEP program and involvement at CERN.

US LUO helps foster communication between the LHC community and U.S. physicists and helps physicists prepare and adapt to life at CERN. One of US LUO's most important roles is an annual visit to Washington, D.C., where representatives meet with members of Congress to discuss the importance and excitement of particle physics research.

"It's very useful to go and explain the compelling nature of what we do and keep us on the radar," Newman said.

At the meeting, representatives from the four big LHC experiments will present an overview of 2012 operations and results. Scientists from CMS and ATLAS will speak on prospects for the measurement of the Higgs-like boson this year.

Today Newman will talk about overall U.S. participation at CERN and the state of US LUO. On Saturday, CERN senior physicist Rudiger Voss will present on the status of negotiations to carry forward U.S. involvement at CERN in a new framework. The current U.S.-CERN agreement covers involvement between 1997 and 2017.

Saturday will also include a bit of fun – the Young Physicists Lightning Round, which allows young physicists to present their work in a competitive atmosphere. Winners will be invited to join the annual trip to Washington.

Assuming you know how, you could run those types of jobs on your desktop computer. But, if you want to simulate the way particles interact with each other, you have to simulate many particles. And to do that, you need plenty of computing muscle.

The U.S. Department of Energy INCITE program has recently awarded the Computational Physics for Accelerators group in the Scientific Computing Division 80 million hours of supercomputing resources at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF). INCITE is a competitive multi-disciplinary program for providing large-scale research projects with dedicated supercomputing resources. Only about 33% of proposals were funded this year.

In support of the Intensity Frontier at Fermilab, the group will simulate the Main Injector for Project X intensities and the Booster at current intensities and at one of the intensities for Phase One of Project X. In particular, they will model the physics of space charge, which is the effect of particles reacting to others particles’ electric charges, and wakefields, the fields that are generated by and that interact with particle beams as they travel through the accelerator’s metallic pipes. These simulations help explore different configurations of the accelerator.

“Part of what’s making this such a big computing job is that we’re not only simulating one bunch of particles. We’re simulating all the bunches in the Main Injector,” says Jim Amundson, leader of the Computational Physics for Accelerators group. “[That is] some number around 540, and for our largest jobs… we will use on the order of 65 thousand cores to provide a single simulation.”

The simulations will be performed on two IBM Blue Gene supercomputers. Intrepid, a Blue Gene/P machine (a second generation of Blue Gene installation), has approximately 160 thousand cores; a new Blue Gene/Q machine called Mira has 250 thousand—not only more cores, but also faster cores that can do more threading, meaning more parallel data processing.

“What we’re focusing on for this particular proposal is the really large jobs,” says Amundson; ”The biggest ones are inconceivable on our local systems, and even the smaller ones would not be very effective.”

Though the allocated time at the ALCF facilities will not be available until January, the group already has plans for next year’s proposal.

“Next year, we’ll involve adding electron cloud effects,” says Amundson.

' ows_SummaryLinks='

Supernovae have been objects of intense scientific interest. They are the result of the explosions of single stars, but the explosion can be as bright as an entire galaxy, so they can be seen from very large distances. In addition, some types of explosions have known luminosities, so we can accurately estimate distances based on the apparent brightness of the supernova. The ability to measure these large cosmological distances is key to understanding the formation of the universe. In fact, the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics was awarded for pioneering work in this field.

In recent years, I have led the SDSS supernova effort (SDSS SN). Like all experiments, the ultimate goal is to analyze the data and publish the results. The supernova survey is an international effort that has resulted in a sample of over 500 well-identified supernovae and more than 30 publications in scientific journals. Aside from doing some analysis myself, my role is to organize meetings, coordinate analyses and review papers intended for publication. We are preparing to end the SDSS effort with a full data release so that other researchers may make use of this data. However a derivative of SDSS SN will survive: Some of us will seek to improve analysis techniques in collaboration with another major experiment known as Supernovae Legacy Survey (SNLS).

In addition, I work on the Dark Energy Survey (DES) supernova survey. Originally co-leader of the supernova effort, I relinquished that role to concentrate on the software needed. Although some supernovae are visually obvious, most are discovered by a quantitative analysis that involves subtracting images of the sky taken at two different times and looking for new sources of light that were absent from the first image. The analysis would be fairly easy if the observing conditions were always the same. Unfortunately, the telescope alignment changes slightly, the atmosphere bends the light in different ways, the level of sky background changes and a host of objects can be mistaken for real supernovae depending on the selection criteria. Therefore, construction of an analysis program and the optimization of frame subtraction has been the focus of my efforts in recent months.
